WESTMORELAND, CUMBERLAND, DURHAM & NORTHUMBERLAND ILLUSTRATED
FROM ORIGINAL DRAWINGS BY THOMAS ALLOM &c.
FISHER, SON & Co. LONDON - 1832

Some interesting information about Durham and the prints
Durham is a county in the north of England. It's northern border is with Northumberland, to the east is Cumberland and Westmoreland and to the south the North Riding of Yorkshire.
The views in Durham are mainly of buildings of interest, for example the Palace of the Bishop of Durham with its magnificent archways and turrets.
The Cathedral at Durham is shown from many angles (mainly interiors) and depicts a mixture of Saxon and Norman architecture as well as various added features from other time periods. The people depicted within the cathedral show the immensity of it although it is not as large as other cathedrals in England.
There are various castles and abbeys in Durham some of which are ruins. Lindisfarn Abbey, for example, is a ruin of a once magnificent building, built in Saxon Britain. It has much historical significance and was built on Holy Island. The Monastery was totally destroyed, and the abbey reduced to a ruin shortly after the Bishop and monks deserted it in approx. 832 A.D. and it was then inhabited by Benedictine monks and flourished for a while.
